What income qualifies for the D7 visa?
The D7 accepts pension income, rental income, investment dividends, remote employment income from a non-Portuguese employer, and other regular passive income. You must demonstrate sufficient income to support yourself and any dependants without relying on Portuguese employment. The minimum threshold is based on the Portuguese minimum wage, currently around €870 per month for the main applicant, with proportional increases for dependants.
Can I work remotely on a D7 visa?
Yes. The D7 visa permits remote work for a non-Portuguese employer. Your employment income from outside Portugal qualifies as passive income for visa purposes. Many of our clients are remote workers employed by US, UK, or other international companies. Do I need to live in Portugal on a D7 visa?
Yes. Unlike the Golden Visa, the D7 requires you to be resident in Portugal. You must spend the majority of your time in the country. This visa is designed for people who intend to relocate to Portugal, not for those seeking residency without living there.
Can my family be included in the application?
Yes. Spouses or legal partners, dependent children, and dependent parents can be included under a single D7 visa application. Family members receive the same residence rights and path to citizenship. Income requirements increase proportionally for each dependant included.
What is the timeline from application to residence permit?
From initial consultation to residence permit, the typical timeline is 3 to 6 months. This includes document preparation, NIF and bank account setup, consulate appointment and visa issuance, and AIMA residence permit appointment after arrival in Portugal. Timelines vary based on consulate scheduling and AIMA processing capacity.
When can I apply for Portuguese citizenship?
After 5 years of legal residence under the D7 visa, you may apply for Portuguese citizenship and an EU passport. Citizenship requires A2 Portuguese language level, maintained residence, and a clean criminal record.
