What You Need to Qualify

The Portugal Golden Visa is open to non-EU, non-EEA, and non-Swiss nationals who meet the following requirements.

Qualifying Investment

Make one of the approved investments and maintain it for a minimum of five years. The most common route is a 500,000 EUR subscription to a qualifying venture capital or private equity fund, or a 250,000 EUR donation to an approved cultural heritage project (reduced to 200,000 EUR in low-density areas).

Minimum Stay

Spend at least 7 days in Portugal during the first year and 14 days in each subsequent two-year renewal period. There is no requirement to relocate or make Portugal your primary residence.

Personal Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old, hold citizenship of a non-EU / non-EEA / non-Swiss country, and provide a clean criminal record from both your country of residence and Portugal. All investment funds must originate from outside Portugal and come from a legal, traceable source.

Key Documentation

A valid passport, Portuguese tax identification number (NIF), Portuguese bank account, proof of investment, criminal record certificates, and a sworn statement confirming compliance with the minimum investment for five years. All foreign documents must be apostilled and translated into Portuguese.

Family Members

Your spouse or legal partner (including de facto unions of 2+ years), dependent children under 18 (or any age if unmarried, in full-time education, and financially dependent), and parents over 65 (or under 65 if financially dependent) can all be included in a single application.

Path to Citizenship

Under current law, you may apply for permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship after 5 years of legal residence. Parliament approved amendments in October 2025 to extend this to 10 years, but the bill was vetoed by the President in December 2025 and returned to Parliament. The 5-year rule remains in effect. We recommend discussing the latest timeline with our legal team.
